The Gables 1953
The Gables in 1953, with my grandparents Pop Pop and Grannie

This historic house came back into our family on February 3rd 2014. It had last been owned by our family from 1953 – 1973. The old photograph here shows my grandmother preparing her rose garden, which was her pride and joy, and is I believe referred to loosely in the book, The House on The Strand. My Grandfather is standing by the gate. He was a Cornishman, quite tall, and fought in the First World War at Gallipoli and at The Somme. He was an artist in his latter years and quite a stern character as I remember him.

After the First World War they lived in India for some years, and then near London during the Second World War.

During their retirement at The Gables my grandparents got to know Daphne Du Maurier, who was then writing her book The House on the Strand and other famous novels. As members of the Old Cornwall Society which used to have a base at St Andrew’s church in Tywardreath, this society we understand helped Daphne with research for her historical novels.

Local Amenities

Tywardreath has an excellent pub, a fantastic butcher, a great fish and chip shop, a hairdressing/beauty salon, a beautiful Church and a Chapel. Fowey is 2 miles and is a beautiful harbour town, lots of nice little shops, boats trips etc. Par is half a mile and has main line train station. Par also has a Post Office, surgery, small supermarket, pharmacy etc.

Walking and Cycling

Tywardreath is an ideal base for walkers and cyclists. The Saint's Way is close by, as well as many stunningly beautiful coast paths. The path from Polkerris to Fowey is a particular favourite. There is plenty of space for your bikes in the barn, and there are many lanes and local places of interest to cycle through and explore.

We welcome dogs

You are very welcome to bring a couple of pet dogs. We have a basket and bowls and a space they can safely rest and be warm downstairs at night. Par Sands is only a 15-20 min walk and is a dog-friendly beach all year round.
